Coushatte Recreation Ranch CommunityIn 1877 the Nelius Family settled here at Coushatte in Bellville, Texas. They farmed cotton and raised cattle. Horses were used in the fields until after 1948. Then, in the 1950s, Trenckmann Nelius began to raise chickens and eggs. Cattle raising was still practiced, along with farming maize, to provide food for the chickens. In 1973, Trenckmann and Margie Nelius started the Coushatte Recreation Ranch with only 24 hookups. Since then it has grown to 225 sites with full hook ups, both 30 and 50 amp! Margie named the campground Coushatte Recreaction Ranch after the Coushatte Indians that thrived on this very land long ago. There is a Indian Mound on the ranch, and many arrow heads have been found there. Since starting the Ranch, Trenckmann and Margie had five children; three sons: Fritz, Wayne, and Howard; and two daughters: Gail and Margie. Howard and his wife Pamela Nelius owned and operated Coushatte Recreation Ranch up until November 2019 when they decided to sell the Ranch after many years of caring for the campground. We now have a new owner by name of George Jarkesy, who bought the campground on November 12, 2019 to make it bigger and better for the tenants to enjoy. This is a great place to stay on the weekend. So, grab your loved ones, pack your bags, and head to Coushatte Recreation Ranch for your Texas escape under the stars.
Sulphur Springs CampWelcome to Sulphur Springs CampFishing has long been the number one attraction of our camp visitors. During the spring months of February, March, and April, the annual white bass run occurs. The sand bass, or white bass as they are called, come from Lake Buchanan upstream to spawn in the waters of Sulphur Springs Camp, Inc. During these months it is not unusual for people to catch their limit in a very short time. The Colorado River offers many types of fish to be caught. Catfish such as Channel Catfish, Flathead (Yellow Cat) Catfish, and Chuckleheaded Blue Catfish, White Bass, Carp, Stripers, Crappie, Buffalo, Gar, Perch, and many other kinds are here for the angler to pursue. For those who do not enjoy fishing, the camp offers many other activities such as: bird watching, inner tubing, swimming, volleyball, white water canoeing, or just relaxing and enjoying being in the beautiful rustic country surroundings. The abundance of wildlife animals provides an excellent place for animal lovers. Deer, turkey, squirrels, raccoons, and birds of many species are plentiful here and one may watch their activities in their natural surroundings.
